(EstateNewsWire.com, December 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- An auction at the headquarters of Digital Domain Media Group included high-end Herman Miller desk chairs, leather couches and a conference table built from the wing of a C119 airplane. The computer animation company went bankrupt in September. The office in Port St. Lucie, Florida, had employed 346. A judge recently ordered an auction of the electronics and furniture in the studio that had received tax breaks and incentives from the state and municipal authorities. An accountant from Port St. Lucie was one of the bargain-hunters who attended. “Such extravagance,” Mark Thomas, who was checking out furniture, told The Palm Beach Post. The animation studio at 10250 SW Village Parkway featured a screening room that can accommodate 146 and more seating than the employees could ever use. “You can tell it was a nice work environment – look at those bean bags,” said Thomas. The former CEO, John Textor, had often referred to “underutilized labor” in talks with investors. He appeared on the first day of the auction to claim property he said was personal. His roomy office included a bathroom with a full shower. The company received pledges including tax credits, land and cash worth $135 million from Florida and the cities of Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach. Textor had predicted that a new animation industry would develop in Florida. Digital Domain, however, sought bankruptcy protection in September. One West Palm Beach businessman visiting the headquarters called it ridiculous. “For a city as small as Port St. Lucie to have invested so much, it’s depressing,” said Steven Friedman, a partner at B2B CFO. Port St. Lucie issued bonds for $40 million to help pay to build the animation studio. Digital Domain now is owned by Port St. Lucie and a Chinese company. They will divide the proceeds from the auction.
