(EstateNewsWire.com, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- On its fifth anniversary, the Half Moon pub and brewery business on the well-known site of the West Lindsey pub is set to embark on an £100,000 expansion project.
Business owner and licensee Phil Troop is going against what the economy says and has already begun construction on his locally famous pub. The six-figure expansion will include the building of a much larger brewery that is expected to quadruple the size and capacity of Grafters Ales at Wingham by Stow, near Gainsborough.
Troop hopes to have the project done by the end of the calendar year and says that the new addition will totally change the operation at the Half Moon pub in the village.
In addition to a bigger brewing area, the project will create a beer garden, an office, and viewing windows for those interested in how ale is made.
While this is a new and exciting adventure for Mr. Troop, the 48-year-old admits that it has not been an easy road for the company. Troop and his wife Tracy have owned the Half Moon for over fifteen years said that in 2002, the company came face to face with bankruptcy. They were able to recover nicely, but in 2007 had further money troubles.
"There are many reasons why pubs have struggled in recent years and we've been affected by most of them because we're also off the beaten track," he said.
"Most pubs now do food but we knew we had to do something really different to attract customers and keep them.
"As a real ale enthusiast I decided that real ale would be our unique element.
"So I learned how to be a brewer, all my customers liked it and I've expanded to take on take on both a full-time brewer and a delivery driver.
"So next summer we're expecting the brewery tour to be an attraction in its own right.
"I've already had people come from Manchester to Lincoln by train, ride over to Willingham by bicycle and then back to Gainsborough and return home by train.
"So now we supply other pubs, do beer swaps with other breweries and still enter the occasional beer competition – we won the silver and two bronze awards in the Campaign for Real Ale's (Camra) Best Beer in Britain East Midlands final this year."
32-year-old brewer Aaron Taylor said: "The extended facilities mean that, instead of the present weekly limit of 36 nine-gallon firkins a week, we'll be able to quadruple our capacity."
Camra spokesman Jon Howard said: "It's fantastic to see pioneering breweries such as Grafters undergoing high levels of demand for their beers.
"This really reflects how far the industry has come in recent years – as no-one could have predicted ten years ago that by the end of 2012 there would be more than 1,000 breweries now operational across the UK.
"It really is a golden age to be a real ale drinker, and it is hoped successful companies such as Grafters continue to flourish in these tough economic times."
