When Keith arrived at the customer’s home he was not surprised to discover the ugly old vinyl dryer vent hose. “Many homeowners are using this type of dryer vent system because it is cheap and easy to install,” said O’Loane. “Vinyl or flexible foil dryer vent systems should be replaced with solid metal vents and professionally installed to ensure maximum air flow.”
Keith removed the hose from the back of dryer and found it was full of lint. He couldn’t believe the customer reattached this old thing to their new dryer. Keith removed the old dryer vent hose while he explained the importance of annual dryer vent cleaning and proper dryer vent installation to ensure a safe and efficient dryer.
The Wizard went out to his fully equipped van to gather the parts needed to install a new dryer vent system. The dryer duct should be solid metal, not plastic or vinyl. If the dryer were to throw a spark, the combustible lint would ignite and the vinyl material would become fuel to feed the flames. A solid metal vent would likely contain a spark until it burns itself out.
Keith explained how the old system was a serious fire hazard and how the newer system would be much more efficient, promoting energy savings and preventing a dryer fire. His customer learned an expensive lesson that day; however, he was glad the Wizard fixed the problem before it led to a fire.
