(EstateNewsWire.com, September 12, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A recent survey in England regarding agents fees has revealed that more than 25 percent of the people in the UK believe that they have been ripped off by some agents at some point in their lives. This ripping off was by letting agents who charged them considerably higher fees than were necessary.
The study was conducted with 5000 people and 23 percent of those people were of the belief that agents have charged them unfairly high amounts for different services, like renewing contracts and administration and repeat credit checks.
The housing charities of UK suggest that the people living on rent are most distressed about the elevated fees and administration charges. The housing charities also claim that they know many cases where renters were charged more than £150 each year for repeat credit checks which actually costs around £8 to £25.
The Director of policy, campaigns and communication at one shelter, Kay Boycott, said that the letting agents are charging high fees to both landlords and tenants, which is why many people go in search for a new place to rent where they can pay both low fees and rent.
"It's scandalous that some letting agents are creaming off huge profits from the boom in private renting by charging both tenants and landlords fees that are totally out of proportion to the service they provide. With our investigation uncovering unexplained charges of over £500, we need to make sure letting agent fees are reasonable. With costs like these, on top of the sky-high rents families already face, it's no surprise many dread the day they have to look for a new place to rent."
