(EstateNewsWire.com, September 09, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Two Missouri groups, who were pushing hard to increase the minimum wage rate and to get a plan for tightening regulation on payday loans on the November Ballot, have given up their fight and announced earlier this month that they are dropping their legal challenge.
The two Missourians groups known as ‘Give Missourians a raise and Responsible Lending’ were told by the secretary of State, Robin Carnahan, that they have insufficient signatures to fulfill the demand in the ballot. The Missouri groups were of the view that the objection on the number of signatures was inappropriately decided and they filed a lawsuit to challenge the ruling. However, after continuously fighting to limit the payday loans and get a raise in the minimum wage rate in the ballot, the group has finally dropped the challenge.
"We are sad to report that the payday industry and minimum wage opponents' unprecedented legal challenges effectively disenfranchised thousands of Missourians. It is another example of big monied corporate interests displacing the people's interests in the democratic process." was the statement that one of the campaign leaders of the groups Rev. Martin Rafanan made, according to columbiatribune.com.
Even after dropping the legal challenge, the two Missouri groups still believe that the ruling was improperly invalidated as they fulfilled the required of sufficient number of signatures. Over the years, many groups and non-for-profit organizations have tried to oppose the payday loan measures and have spent a large amount of money as well.
However, one of the representatives of the two groups (Marry Still) says that the fight is not over and she will continue to push hard to increase the wage rate and limit the payday loans.
"If I'm a state senator, I'm going to continue the fight," she said. "Missourians know 400 percent APR is not right."
