(EstateNewsWire.com, September 07, 2012 ) Melbourne,Victoria -- Honda announced the development of what according to the Associated Press is the “first home product packed with its prized robotics technology — a sensor-equipped lawn mower.”
The new mower, called the Miimo, is set to go on sale in 2013 in Europe and is touted as the first commercial robotic product available for domestic use. Motoward.com has referred to the Miimo as the Ferrari of lawn mowers.
“We’re excited to see this new technology in mowers,” said the owner of Oakleigh Mower Power, a retailer of lawn mowers and chainsaws in Melbourne. “Right now, we’re just bringing our customers the ride-on mowers for sale and the more traditional lawn mowers in Melbourne, but we can’t wait for this great new technology to come to Australia. This is a whole new way for people to think of lawn care.”
According to Motoward.com, the Honda Miimo uses an algorithm that is considered to be very sophisticated and cutting-edge, which cuts the grass in a random pattern. Honda says this means less stress on the grass and more healthy growth as a result. The mower also eliminates the need to collect grass cuttings, because the clippings are so small that they disappear into the root system of the lawn, and act as a natural fertiliser.
Honda reports that the mower itself will emit no carbon dioxide, and will use a lithium-ion battery. When the battery is running low, the Miimo is programmed to automatically return to its charging station.
“We love to learn about the newest in mower technology,” said the owner of Oakleigh. “We were so excited to hear about the development of this technology, but it’s also great because it’s one of the first domestic products of its kind, and as leaders in the power mower market in Melbourne, it’s great to hear that lawn mower technology is at the forefront of robotic development.”
