(EstateNewsWire.com, August 24, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- GlobalFoundries is moving ahead with their planned $2.3 billion expansion at their three year old Malta (New York) Fab 8 plant. They say that this expansion will increase their capacity to approximately 60,000 wafers per month.
Construction on the expansion is set to begin in August 2012 and is scheduled for completion in December 2013. In addition to the planned capacity expansion, the project will add 900-1000 construction jobs as well as 200 to 300 additional employees.
Eric Choh, who is the general manager of the Malta plant, stated that interest from their current partners led to the planned expansion. With the addition of the expansion, the total cost of the Malta project increases from $4.6 billion to $6.9 billion.
Choh also says that the Fab 8 has gotten better over time. The size is bigger and the project is better according to Choh’s recent comments.
The Malta site is also slated to become home to all future development efforts by GlobalFoundries, as well as being the home for nearly all the leading research and development being done in the field of wafer production
One of the main reasons for the expansion is the strong demand by GlobalFoundries customers. Choh stated that the site at Malta is helping to redefine the area in upstate New York as an attractive area for the entire semiconductor industry.
Original construction on the building started three years ago. Once the expansion is completed, the cleanroom will be 300,000 square feet (up from the current 210,000 square feet) while employment will increase to 1800 people (an increase of 400 people)
