General Motors Recalls 250,000 SUVS Due to Power Door Lock Failures Reports TheLockandHandle.com.au

(EstateNewsWire.com, August 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- General Motors recently announced a recall of nearly 250,000 midsize SUVS throughout 20 states as well as the District of Columbia. The reason for the recall is a side power door lock failure that can lead to vehicle fires. The recall also affected another 9150 vehicles in Canada as well as a few thousand exports, bringing the total number of affected vehicles to 260,000.

GM stated that fluid can enter the drivers’ door modules and cause corrosion. This corrosion can cause a short in the circuit board, and the short can lead to possible failures of both the power door lock switches and the window switches.

GM also said that in rare cases, the short may cause overheating. This overheating can produce smoke, fire, and a foul odor. They are aware of fires in the door modules, but none of the fires have spread outside the interior of the vehicle. There are no known crashes or injuries related to the side power door lock issues.

In June of this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) upgraded its investigation of the issue to an engineering analysis. GM had received more than 160 reports and nearly 700 warranty claims related to the door lock failure. The NHTSA received 83 complaints; 66 of these complaints alleged that the door module had melted or burned, while 17 complaints stated that the door and window switches operated erratically if at all. 28 complaints stated that the issue had led to driver door fires. Some of these 28 complaints allege that the vehicle was turned off with the keys removed from the ignition as well as being unattended at the time of the fires.

The recall covers several different models that are produced by GM. The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and the 2006 GMC Envoy XL are two of the affected models. In addition, 2006-2007 Trailblazers, Envoys, Buick Rainiers, Saab 9-7xs, and Isuzu Ascenders are also affected by the recall. Most if not all of the affected models were sold in or are currently registered in ‘salt belt states’ which include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
