(EstateNewsWire.com, June 28, 2012 ) Columbus, OH – Handyman services are in high demand with more people staying in their homes while they wait for a better opportunity to sell. Economic conditions have made it difficult to sell a home for a profit today. Many people are upside down, owing more on their mortgage than their home is worth in today’s market.
Unfortunately, the tough economy has also opened the door to scammers who take advantage of people. Tom Mills, owner of HandyPro Handyman Services in Columbus says, “Beware of the door-knocking handyman who notices a potential problem with your home and offers a solution,” said Mills. “A reputable handyman does not go door knocking for work.” Visit http://www.handypro.com/w-nw-columbus.html to learn more.
Anyone can become a victim of a handyman scam, from young homeowners to seniors who need help with home maintenance. Some will point out a specific problem that could lead to serious damage without their service. They may even do a small job to gain the homeowner’s trust and then take a large upfront payment to purchase material for a larger job, but disappear. When the customer calls to see when they will begin service, they find the phone number has been disconnected and the company doesn’t exist.
Another common handyman scam involves the plan to rob the homeowner. When the handyman is allowed inside to quote a job, he is looking around to see if there is a security system and to case the place for valuables. He probably already knows the victim’s schedule and when he can safely return to his “job.
Many handyman services advertise on the internet, the newspaper and by mail. Most of them are reputable, but some are not. Tom Mills advises consumers to do some research before choosing a handyman service to work on their home. “People deserve an honest service provider and only the reputable handyman deserves their business,” said Mills.
Tom Mills and his wife, Laurie have always dreamed of owning a business where they provide a needed service that offers great value to the customer and requires a high level of integrity and customer service. The dream became reality when Tom and Laurie Mills purchased their HandyPro Handyman Services franchise in Columbus, Ohio in November, 2010.
