Acanthamoeba keratitis is particularly dangerous because it is difficult to treat and can lead to blindness if not controlled; patients may need corneal transplants. The disease is caused by Acanthamoeba, a parasite that lives in water, sewage systems, heating and cooling systems, and soil. Normally, a small number of contact lens wearers develop the infection after using tap water or other homemade solution to rinse and store their lenses. While Advanced Medical Optics says it does not know why the solution became infected, the firm did enact a previous recall of MoisturePlus due to contamination at a Chinese factory.
