(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 29, 2011 ) SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - Cooler weather encourages people to flip on their furnaces, but many overlook the important annual furnace inspection that helps prevents prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Gabriel Carini, a San Diego heating and air conditioning repair expert.
"Most people need a reminder since furnace maintenance won't be the first thing on the priority list during the holidays. We just want everyone to have a happy, safe season," says the president of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning.
San Diego Gas & Electric also urged customers to be safe and get their furnaces inspected by a licensed, qualified professional. They say problems with the furnace are frequently the culprit behind carbon monoxide in the home.
"Keeping up with the regular inspections, not putting off a furnace repair, learning the signs that indicate carbon monoxide poisoning and getting informed about safely using and maintaining gas appliances are ways to protect property and family," says Carini.
The colorless, odorless, tasteless, poisonous gas is produced when carbon-based fuels, such as kerosene, gasoline, propane, natural gas, oil, charcoal or wood, are burned with inadequate amounts of oxygen. The technical term is called incomplete combustion, and that is what can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Midland moderate carbon monoxide poisoning has symptoms similar to the flu without the fever, including headache, fatigue, and shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness.
"Carbon monoxide detectors are a good way to alert homeowners of dangerous levels of the gas that have accumulated, but for their own safety detectors should not take the place ofroutine inspections and cleanings of their furnace," says Carini, a heating and air conditioning services provider.
Visit the website for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or the local utility company for more information and precautions regarding carbon monoxide poisoning and safety.
