(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 07, 2011 ) New City, NY – With winter upon us many people are asking the local New City handyman if a large accumulation of snow on the roof can be damaging to their home. Some are concerned that the roof could cave in from the weight.
According to the New City handyman, snow and ice can cause roof damage and though the threat of collapse is a low probability, it is possible. Snow can weigh up to 30 pounds per square foot. On a 1500 square foot house with a roof surface area of 1600 square feet, thatÂ’s 48,000 pounds or more of snow on the roof! Some roofs are not built to withstand that much weight.
Hubert Christophe owns HandyPro Handyman Services in New City NY. With winter approaching and people concerned about snow on the roof, he offers the following advice about roof raking and safety tips to residents who choose to do it themselves:
• Roof raking will help alleviate the stress on the roof and damage to gutters and downspouts.
• A roof rake is a solid piece of metal or plastic on the end of an extension pole and can be purchased at most local hardware stores.
• Remove as much as possible from the top of the roof down toward the gutters; about 10 to 15 feet should be sufficient.
• Never get on the roof to do this! It is a slippery slope and snow is not soft to land on!
• Do not attempt to do this on a ladder. When ice and snow melts, it can accumulate on the rungs and refreeze in minutes, creating a slippery surface.
• If the home is more than one story high, making it impossible to roof rake while standing on firm ground, then consider hiring it done to be safe. Some home maintenance jobs are better left to a professional.
