(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 07, 2010 ) Los Angeles, CA - Although every state with mandatory auto insurance sets guidelines for minimum coverage levels, these levels of protection may not always prove sufficient to cover all of the damages that can result from an accident. OnlineAutoInsurance.com makes it easy for consumers to see how much it would cost to get extra protection through policies that go beyond the state-required minimum levels of coverage.
Knowing how much coverage is desired is an important prerequisite when getting ready to hunt for a quality car insurance policy. Although many shoppers going online may think that settling for minimal coverage can be the only way to get a good rate, they may be surprised to find that they can obtain low cost auto insurance with more extensive coverage than is state-required. As the National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises in its consumer guide to auto insurance, state-set limits may be “too low to fully cover you if you cause a serious accident. Most insurers let you buy higher amounts or ‘limits’ of liability coverage, often without much increase in your premium.”
Minimum coverage requirements vary widely across the country. The states with the highest minimum limits are Maine and Alaska, which both require motorists to carry insurance that will cover up to $50,000 for the injury to or death of any one person, $100,000 for one accident resulting in injury to or death of more than one person and $25,000 for property damage per accident — commonly denoted as 50/100/25. These states require very high levels of coverage compared to others like Ohio, which has the lowest liability requirements. Motorists in that state are required to have policies that only reach the 12.5/25/7.5 threshold.
State legislators can increase or decrease the minimum car insurance levels by amending the financial responsibility laws. Just last week, a bill was introduced to the Pennsylvania State Legislature that would double the requirements there; currently they are set at 15/30/5.

In light of this, a resident of the Pennsylvania may want to consider, at the very least, getting an insurance policy with property damage liability limits that are greater than the $5,000 requirement.
