ArcelorMittal (MT: 39.47, 1.89, 5.03%), the world's largest steelmaker, has announced plans to restart several blast furnaces in order to meet demand and offset lost production from planned maintenance at other blast furnaces.
ArcelorMittal restarted a small blast furnace at Eisenhuettenstadt, Germany and announced plans to restart blast furnaces at its Florange and Dunkirk plants in France.
The Luxembourg-based steel maker said it "successfully restarted" a blast furnace at Eisenhuettenstadt on Feb. 4 that is able to produce about 550,000 tons of steel annually. The furnace had been closed since the last quarter of 2008.
"The restart of the blast furnace is necessary to improve our service towards internal and external clients and to meet the current demands of the market," said Thorsten Brand, chief executive of ArcelorMittal Eisenhuettenstadt.
He also said the blast furnace restart is temporary.
"[We] will be monitoring the demand situation very closely to decide how long it is possible to operate the furnace in a sustained and cost-effective manner," he said.
