More and more pressure is being put on Americans to advance their degrees in order to have job security (for those already employed) and to be marketable (for potential job seekers). How can they fund their graduate education?
Deciding to study for a graduate course – whether it is a taught or research program – is a big decision to make and foresight should be employed. The most important thing to consider is funding. It comes as no surprise that the cost of attending graduate school is on the higher side and lack of proper planning can impair impair your chances of completing your graduate degree program successfully.
There are three ways of funding a masters or doctorate education. The first and most obvious one is self funding. Tuition costs vary greatly from institution to institution and price comparisons should be made to get the best education cost-effectively. On the other hand, employers may cover all your college costs if the course is related to your area of expertise allowing you to advance your position and performance in your company.
The second option which happens to be the most sought after is - applying for funding. Several colleges do offer partial financial assistance to graduate students. Prior to seeking enrollment, prospective students are urged to make inquiries relating to financial assistance available and the registration process. Should the college you wish to attend not be in a position to offer financial aid, you should apply for external funding. These include: awards, scholarships and grants.
Sheila Danzig, founder of Degree.com, http://www.degree.com, the premier internet portal for online study, commented on the available external funding, saying, “Competition for [external] funding is fierce so you need to do your research and apply before the deadline. Many awards have strict eligibility rules so you need to ensure you comply with them.” She added that, many grant programs offer funding to minorities for schooling through a graduate program. The American Indian Graduate Center, the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, and the Black Collegian Organization are just but a few. Danzig has written THE BIG BOOK OF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION which sells on Amazon for $19.95. She is currently offering review copies FREE at http://degree.com/free-downloads.htm Download it today and pass it onto other students now, because we do not know how long this offer will last.
The third funding option would be taking out a loan. A lot of thought should be put in before deciding to secure a loan which should be greatly influenced by an individualÂ’s ability to pay it off with ease. These loans can be from banks or money lending institutions. Through the federal government, there are several loans available for graduate studies, as well. In terms of funding, prospective students can look for non-traditional sources, such as funding for online studies. Obtaining a master's degree online will make working your educational schedule around your life a simpler than attendance at a traditional college or university.
