Shares of Qwest Communications International Inc. rose Thursday after the company said its pension expenses would fall this year and its earnings for 2009 would come in near the top of its expectations.
Qwest, the primary local phone service provider in 14 mostly western states, said in a regulatory filing late Wednesday that pension savings would result in 2010 from its decision to terminate pension accrual payments for managers Jan. 1 and to eliminate retiree death benefits March 1.
The company also its 2009 free cash flow will exceed $1.7 billion, the upper end of its previous guidance. Qwest also said that for 2009 it expects to report earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization at the high end of its projected range of $4.25 billion to $4.4 billion.
In a note to clients Thursday, Deutsche Bank Securities analyst Brett Feldman reaffirmed his "Buy" rating on the shares with a $4.75 share price target.
The pension forecast "suggests potential upside to our 2010 estimates" for earnings per share.
Shares of Qwest rose 17 cents, or 3.8 percent, at $4.68 in afternoon trading.
