Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) has a lot riding on the adoption of faster fourth-generation, or 4G, wireless technology.
That's according to Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse, who said 4G would be "enormously important" for the company this year.
"2010 is the year of 4G for Sprint," he told analysts during an investor conference Wednesday.
The company, which continues to lose customers and see revenue fall, is looking for outside areas of growth. It owns a majority stake in Clearwire Corp. (CLWR), which is building out a nationwide 4G network using a long-range Wi-Fi technology called WiMax.
Along with higher speeds, Hesse said the service will be able to offer more capacity and value to customers. While he expects prices to be the same, customers will get more with 4G.
Sprint's other growth area comes from the pre-paid business. The wireless carrier doubled down on the segment by acquiring Virgin Mobile USA. Hesse said he expects pre-paid to grow faster than the traditional contract service. The company plans to avoid cannibalizing its core Sprint business by offering the pre-paid services through different brands and distribution outlet, he added.
While pricing in the pre-paid business got aggressive last year, he said long-term pricing in the area would be more rational. He added Sprint would be more competitive.
