Recent News on UBS AG (NYSE:UBS)
UBS AG promoted two internal managers to oversee prime-brokerage sales to U.S. hedge funds.
Charlotte Burkeman, global head of capital introduction in the firm's New York prime-brokerage unit, and Jon Yalmokas, who manages equity-derivatives sales, together will oversee U.S. sales in the division. Prime brokerage clears hedge funds' trades and performs other services such as lending them cash and stocks in exchange for fees. The UBS appointments were announced to employees Tuesday.
Ms. Burkeman and Mr. Yalmokas will retain management responsibilities in capital introduction and swaps sales, and both will report to John Laub, head of U.S. prime services. The U.S. prime-brokerage sales head is Jon Jodka, who joined UBS in 2008. He will move to a senior client-relationship role.
In December, UBS hired Morgan Stanley's former U.S. prime-brokerage head, Patrick Mortimer, to manage client relationships. Mr. Mortimer starts this month.
The executive moves are the latest at UBS's prime brokerage, which last year saw its global head, Alex Ehrlich, depart for rival Morgan Stanley. Taking his place at UBS was Stuart Hendel, Morgan Stanley's former global prime-brokerage head. The firms' reshuffling was part of a broader shake-up in prime-brokerage executive ranks across Wall Street.
Prime brokerages are anticipating an increase in business this year as new investments flow into hedge funds and more new funds open. During much of both 2008 and 2009, investors pulled more money out of hedge funds than they put into them, and fund closures were more plentiful than launches.
