Shares of U.S. financial stocks rose more than 1% on Monday, bucking a weaker market earlier in the day.
Goldman Sachs analysts on Monday estimated the current credit-loss cycle in the U.S. financial sector is two-thirds of the way done, and that consumer credit looks to be holding up better than expected, while prime mortgages and commercial real estate remain problem areas.
"If unemployment flattens out at a high level, consumer credit will improve. Thus we remain positive on big banks and credit-card stocks with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM 42.40, -0.09, -0.21%) , Bank of America Corp.(BAC 15.83, -0.02, -0.13%) and Capital One Financial Corp.(COF 38.26, -0.10, -0.26%) rated conviction-list buy," the analysts said. All three of those stocks rose.
In the broader market, the Financial Select Sector SPDR(XLF 14.66, +0.38, +2.66%), added 1.3%.
On the downside, asset manager Franklin Resources Inc.(BEN 108.03, -0.94, -0.86%) fell 2%.
Pali Research analyst Douglas Sipkin on Monday downgraded shares of Franklin to neutral from buy. Since July 17, the stock has rallied 50% compared with a 15% gain for the asset-management sector and a 16% rise in the S&P 500 Index(SPX 1,096, +4.14, +0.38%), the analyst said.
