(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 23, 2009 ) UK - You may have assumed that snapping up a property in an expensive city for under £40,000 was an impossibility, but think again - Edinburgh Architect Andrew Stoane has designed a flat-pack home in a bid to make housing more affordable again – but, after the unpopularity of Ikea’s flat pack ‘BoKlok’ homes, will these fare any better?...
In a bid to tackle the shortage and affordability of UK property, Architect Andrew Stoane has designed the one-bedroom flatpack ‘Anabo’ property, which can be snapped up for £40,000.
The Anabo - whose name comes from the biological process of anabolism – the creation of living organism from small components - is factory made in modules and can be bolted together on site.
A prototype is to be unveiled on the campus of Edinburgh University next month and, if popular, Stoane will try to secure funds to mass produce the homes, buy plots of land, obtain planning permission and lay building foundations.
Mr Stoane says, “For anyone on an average salary, home ownership is a challenge. This is a bid to make homes affordable again.
“I’m frustrated by builders who make homes of too low a quality at too high a price and don’t build enough reasonably priced well-made homes,” he added. He also believes that factory made homes have fewer faults than those built from scratch on site.
Anabo will be available to potential property buyers via the companyÂ’s website, where customers will be able to find a location, order a house, and choose colours and kitchen and bathroom fittings. They can even arrange a mortgage online.
Within 10 days the house should be ready to be occupied and buyers will be able to buy the smallest Anabo house online for as little as £40,000. The most impressive element is the option for owners to buy extensions to double or even triple the original size of the Anabo.
Buyers will own the buildings, but lease the land, paying a quarterly ground rent, which will help to keep the Anabo homes affordable.
Buyers should be able to purchase the homes online by the end of this year.
