(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 23, 2009 ) UK - In a display of very un-British optimism, the UK Government has unveiled its ‘Heatwave Plan for England,’ which advises that all homeowners in the UK should follow the Mediterranean’s example and paint their houses white in order to reflect the heat and replace carpets with tiles or wood – fine for summer, but what about our British winters?..
In a bid to do something to combat climate change heatwaves, the UK Government seems to have forgotten which country they are living in. This is the country that summer has skipped for the last two years and even when we we do have a decent few months, its hardly the unbearable heat worthy of a ‘heatwave plan’ is it?
Still, the Department of HealthÂ’s new plan is here and it follows the tried and tested methods of keeping homes cool in Mediterranean countries.
They advise painting UK properties white, replacing carpets with tiles or wood and metal blinds swapped for curtains with light linings.
It has been estimated that painting the average UK property white will cost each homeowner around £3,750 whilst changing flooring could cost thousands more.
If you are having trouble visualizing your two-bed semi in Cleethorpes in a Costa del Sol style, you can ask for help and advice through the Department of Health, who also offer invaluable tips such as opening windows to combat the heat.
The 39-page plan aims to help householders, hospitals and care homes prepare for heatwaves, which are predicted to become more common, meaning that thousands of people, especially the very old and the very young, could die.
Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, said, “In contrast to deaths associated with cold snaps in winter, the rise in mortality as a result of very warm weather follows very sharply - within one or two days of the temperature rising.
“This means that by the time a heatwave starts, the window of opportunity for effective action is very short indeed and therefore proper preparedness is of the essence,” he added.
It does look like we are in for a proper summer this year, with the Met Office predicting that June, July and August will be hot hot hot, so Homebase could be seeing a run on white paint yet.
