(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 29, 2008 ) OAKLAND — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help California fight the Santa Anita Fire burning near the City of Sierra Madre with a population of 10,500 in Los Angeles County. The grant is made possible by FEMA’s declaration at 12:01p.m. on April 27th, shortly after receiving the request from the State.
On April 27, 2008, FEMAÂ’s Region IX office received a request for a fire management assistance declaration from the State of California. Mandatory evacuations forced 1,000 residents from their homes. Approximately 400 residences and two commercial buildings are threatened. Recreational areas and power lines are threatened; at least, one small building was destroyed.
The fire started on April 26, 2008, and had burned approximately 450 acres of federal, state, and private land in the Angeles National Forest, approximately one mile from the Chantry Flats Campground near Sierra Madre. After the fire headed towards residential areas and Sierra Madre, mandatory evacuations were issued. Two evacuation shelters are open in the Memorial Park area, with the Congregational Church designated as the evacuation site for voluntary evacuees.
“With this latest wildfire threatening neighborhoods, our commitment to the people of California remains strong,” said Nancy Ward, Regional Administrator for FEMA Region IX. “FEMA will con-tinue to support our state and local partners during this time of uncertainty.”
Federal fire management assistance is provided through the PresidentÂ’s Disaster Relief Fund and is made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible firefighting costs covered by the aid must first meet a minimum threshold for costs before assistance is provided. Eligible costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.
