(EstateNewsWire.com, August 02, 2013 ) Brooklyn, NY -- Artist Paints at Giant Scale With Silicone Scraper
Chicago, IL (July, 12 2013) – At last night's opening of his 10-day show Ecos Gallery show, artist Juan de Lima Peréz wowed attendees by painting a wall-size landscape on canvas using a Silicone Scraper.
Painting the oversize landscape, which featured a dark, Gothic mountain, took more than four hours and used dozens of buckets of viscous, acrylic paint.
"It was amazing seeing him work," said local librarian and amateur art historian Julia Kneeves. "He moves the Silicone Scraper around with such passion. The paint almost jumps out at you, makes you feel what he wants you to feel."
Known for his large-scale paintings and use of impasto, or thickly applied paint, techniques, Peréz is also known for his innovative use of tools.
"When I create large tableaus, I like to use the silicone scraper," said Peréz. "Brushes, even big ones, are too floppy for the thick acrylics I prefer. They do not press the ridges with the intensity I need. And metal is not flexible enough."
Peréz says he purchases his favorite Kitchen Meister silicone scrapers from Amazon.com.
"Many people think that art comes from expensive tools and materials," said Peréz. "That is a lie! It comes from the soul of the artist, from his talent and vision.
"I like the Kitchen Meister," Peréz added, "because it is durable, cleans easily, does not absorb the paint. Also, it is inexpensive. And I like the many bright colors; they inspire me."
Peréz is a native of New Jersey, but he trained at the prestigious Barcelona Academy of Art in Barcelona, Spain.
"Barcelona was such a wonderful place to study," said Peréz. "The city lives art. I was especially influenced by the architecture of Antonio Gaudí. His huge, organic forms melded themselves into my soul and my work."
Nearby Jackson City has hired Peréz to create a fresco in the lobby of its courthouse. Peréz says he will use his favorite Silicone Scraper for the fresco.
"I have experimented with them," Peréz said. "Though they are flexible, they stand up fairly well stroking the plaster, creating the subtle texture I need. The plaster does tend to wear the silicone scraper out a bit, so I will need several. But they are not so much."
"We're looking forward to his new fresco at the Jackson City Courthouse," said Assistant Mayor Joshua Evans, who attended the gallery opening. "It will be a great cultural addition to our city."
