(EstateNewsWire.com, April 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study released by the WQA Aquatech USA has shown that water softeners set with the proper salt efficiency do not harm septic tanks at all, and in fact may help them.
The Water Quality Research Foundation that commissioned the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to take on the test in 2012 has received its results of the year-long study. The effort was titled “Changes in Septic Tank Effluent Due to Water Softener Use.” and nearly $100,000 was invested into the 18 month study, which included site visits as well as numerous trained experts from WQA, NOWRA, and other regulators from the NSF International.
According to the authors: "The data indicate that the use of efficiently operated water softeners improves septic tank performance, while the use of very inefficient home softeners may have a negative effect on solids discharge to the drain field and the level of impact will depend on the level of hardness in the water, whether the regeneration waste is discharged to the septic tank, and the amount of excess sodium present in regeneration wastes."
Softeners are the agents which keep the remainder of our houses running at high efficiency. They do this through the prevention of damage scale build up, according to David Haataja, who works as executive director of WQA. Comprehensive independent studies have also been done to show the advantage of softeners, and show that they can save energy, money, reduce the use of harmful detergents, and keep landfills less full.
The WQA and NOWRA have collaborated in order to update the "Guidance for the Use of Water Softening and Onsite Wastewater Treatment Equipment", which will now include recommendations for use of water softeners with higher salt efficiencies.
The Water Quality Association is a non-profit that is in charge of upholding the general standards within the water treatment industry. The Water Quality Research Foundation was formed in 1949 and is reorganized independent research organization.
