(EstateNewsWire.com, April 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It appears southern California bonfires on the beach is set to be a large topic of debate in 2013, as the portion of the hang-loose lifestyle is coming under some attack.
The fires have been under scrutiny for some time now. However, the recent move by Newport Beach, which is trying to remove dozens of fire rings out of the sand on Balboa Strand and Corona el Mar State Beach, which has been complained about regarding late-night partying, is now under even more pointed scrutiny. Officials have cited it as a health risk due to the smoke and safety issues for many, and have cited individuals falling into the fire ring with hot ash as a potential problem.
In the latest move, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has looked to create a year-round ban on open burns at the beaches across Los Angeles, as well as orange county. The district staff has cited numerous health risks and negative effects. Opponents of the ban note there are many more problems that are the cause of such troubles.
There also been residents who wrote to the Coastal Commission noting that there are too many problematic parties and nefarious gatherings. Southern California communities have a storied history of attempting to boot outsiders off the beaches, even before the fire rings were established.
A Newport Beach councilman stated that he was against expanding grassy areas on particular beaches as "with grass, we usually get Mexicans coming in there early in the morning, and they claim it as theirs, and it becomes their personal, private grounds all day."
"I grew up in the area, and some of my best summertime memories involve afternoons and evenings at the fire pits roasting marshmallows with friends and family," Catherine Anderson of Newport Beach wrote.
