(EstateNewsWire.com, April 02, 2013 ) Franklin, CT -- A team of Pakistani scientists who belong to the Karachi University have discovered a vital role that is played by an alien plan called Prosopis Juliflora. The plan is known as Babbul in Urdu language, and the complex plant is a large factor in eliminating the habitat of many indigenous species, the scientists feel it still plays an important role is another aspect.
The proper use of the plant is as wood fuel, which can help the Pakistani government product cheap energy. The Pakistani scientists, under Professor Dr. Jamil Hassan Kazmi's leadership, have noted the role of the plant species is also a friend of the local ecosystem and indigenous human population in rural areas across the country.
When talking to The Nation, Professor Doctor Jamil Hassan Kazmi stated that Pakistan could overcome its own energy crises by utilize the wood as mesquite. Recently, the role of mesquite has been established to combat desertification and control of climate change.
The scientist stated that his team had noted research that showed the complex plant was Ecological and Socio-economically viable in the region.
Professor Kazmi stated that the alien plant could be found everywhere across Pakistan, especially in the Sindh region.
“As reported by experts, Prosopis juliflora is in IUCN’s new list of 100 world’s worst invasive alien species. With profound experience of people around the globe, it is almost impossible to terminate the growth of this plant, as it spreads widely in most of the arid and semi-arid areas of the world, especially in Southern Pakistan. The efforts to eradicate or control its dispersion are completely failed. Generally, perception of both public and governments about this plant is quite negative and its most often treated as an ‘evil plant’. On the contrary, it has been established from the recent literature that this species has been quite useful commercially as wood fuel in many areas of Southern Sindh of Pakistan. Beside its popular use as dune fixer, its products has been used extensively for various applications such as forage plant, gum, glucose, furniture, char-coal and bio-char around the world,” he added.
