(EstateNewsWire.com, March 17, 2013 ) London, U.K -- Certain hotels have begun to utilize the use of their seats, tables, and nooks; and some are even to begin to charge for their use. For hotels, the space has become a source of added revenue stream for those who live or work nearby.
Sonja Fisher, who is a sales engineer in California, is among those who does not mind paying a buck for the use of the space. "I've worked in Starbucks, apartment building conference rooms, restaurants, libraries," she said. "Hotel lobbies have become very convenient."
Fisher stated that she is paying for guaranteed use of suitable work space, and thus it is a worthwhile trade for her. "We're a small company and we have limited conference space," she said. "I can see where they'd be O.K. with expensing that."
July Germany, Vice President of the DCI Group and public affairs consultant, stated that she preferred lobbies of hotels and other public spaces to the more standard conference rooms when it came to network collaborations. "It's a more casual setting," she said. "People are more open to talking."
The informality has its downsides, of course. Travelers have little way of knowing beforehand if a couch, table, nook or otherwise is available. However, a little foresight by those who are in control of the meeting can often handle that with ease. Confidentiality is another problem that is not as easily remedied when it comes to those more public places.
Business Coach Nancy Butler says she uses the hotels to meet clients after giving up her physical office years ago, and says privacy is always a consideration that is taken care of. "We need to be able to speak without everybody around us overhearing," she said.
Ms. Butler's second concern is tablespace for taking notes. "If I have to do that in my lap, that's tough," she said.
