(EstateNewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) Kansas City, MO -- Kansas City has begun to tow vehicles blocking the routes of slow plows as the storm forced sanitation works to be canceled.
"We are suspending trash collection for tomorrow so trash scheduled for today will be delayed a week and everything subsequent after that," City Manager Troy Schulte said.
Residents are upset to find that their vehicles are being towed or were confused as to where they could and could not park. The city has told residents to place their cars on the west side of the street if they are living on the north-south routes, while others who live on east-west routes should part on the north side.
Chantale Balem left her residence just as the police were getting ready to tow her vehicle. "I didn't know what side. I kept hearing them say to move it, but I didn't know it was suppose to be over there though," she said.
Though warnings were issued prior, there were 197 locations that were forced to have tow trucks arrive in order to move vehicles.
"The cleanup has become even more urgent because of the impending storm and we need the help of our citizens to make this as smooth as possible," Mayor Sly James said. "We tried our best to give residents as much notice but unfortunately the time is up. The storm is getting nearer and we have to do what is necessary to make sure our emergency vehicles and first responders have access to homes and apartments."
The storm recent storm was said to be more difficult than the previous storms this season due to rain expected to wash away salt, brine, and other mixtures that are used to pretreat the roadways, according to crews.
Schulte warned that plows would be pushing snow onto residents' driveways. "We are going to be plowing a lot more as we try to widen the intersections and the arterials," the city manager said.
