(EstateNewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) Hampshire, UK -- The taps in New Orleans went try for a short spell on Sunday after a single boiler's heating flame ended up out of control in the immense steam generator that powered pumps for the entire city's water treatment plant.
Marcia St. Martin, who works as executive director of the city's Sewage and Water Board, stating the outage lasted nearly 20 minutes. Twitter was ablaze as residents bemoaned the loss starting at 9am Local time. Mayor Mitch Landrieu sent a tweet to his follower regarding the city taking the time to look into the complication.
The loss of pressure inside the boilers opened the way for contamination and water samples were underway.
She stated that a sample collection should be complete by Sunday, and the results ought be available within a 24 hour period. It takes that amount of time to detect any higher levels of bacteria buildup that could compromise the safety of the water.
Until results are in, more than a quarter-million residents will be required to boil water for drinking, brushing, preparing food, or any uses that have tap water in ingested.
“For most of us, baths are fine,” city health officer Karen DeSalvo said. The exceptions are people with low immune systems, open wounds, babies or small children. Infants and small children should be given sponge baths.
A majority of New Orleans, including the French Quarter and Central Business District is on the east bank. The plant which treats the water 135 million gallons of safe-to-drink water per day, compared to the 11 million for the west bank treatment plant that was compromised.
At Zues' Place, which is a pet boarding and daycare center, owner Michelle Ingram stated that she was forced to use bottled water for the 80 dogs and 7 cats currently be held at the facility.
“We were sitting on 20 gallons of water and I just got 21 more,” she said. “Which should last us through tomorrow afternoon — and hopefully we’ll know then whether or not the boil water order is still on.”
