(EstateNewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) San Diego, CA -- With the horse meat scandal causing a bit of a stir, it has also created some need for soul-searching with the supermarket industry. The scandal has also inspired some eye-catching adverts from companies like Tesco as well, which look as if they might have been taken from an EE Cummings' poem rather than a marketing meeting. One reads: If you are not happy, tell us. Seriously. This is it. We are changing.”
The people of Sherborne have taken them the largest supermarket chain in the country, in no uncertain terms, to “Bugger off, Tesco” on a placard being waved in the high street last week. The Dorset town has been the latest in a line of protests against the plans by Tesco to open up shop in the area.
Valerie Singleton, former Blue Peter presenter, is one of over 8,500 individuals to have signed a petition, while shopkeepers on high street closed their blinds and doors for an hour, in an attempt to demonstrate that the town would look if Tesco were to successfully set up in the area.
Tesco has been fought by so many companies that the list looks more like a roll call of the most picturesque towns, including: Sheringham, Aldeburgh in East Anglia, Horsham in West Sussex, as well as Ambleside in Cumbria.
The abstaining from corporations is not relegated to Tesco alone, as criticism has rained down upon companies like Asda and Sainsbury's. The figures, from Kantar Worldpanel, show a more stark example of disdain when one explains the percentage of those who visited any of the main markets. Those families who visited any of the main stores is at 100% Every single individual has spend some time buying some form of product in the largest stores.
Neil Saunders is a retail analyst at Conlumino and states: If Tesco was not wanted, the residents of Sherborne would not need to protest, because people would not shop there. Tesco would fail very quickly and shut up shop.”
Adam Leyland, the editor of The Grocer, the industry magazine, says: “Their one-stop shop model is fantastically convenient. And their scale brings with it low pricing, choice, consistency, food safety – notwithstanding horse meat – and it brings with it innovation.”
