(EstateNewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The female and male cleaners who take care of your hotels are taking hygiene shortcuts in order to meet the deadlines to fix up rooms within 15 minutes. It should surprise no one that rooms that should take nearly an hour to clean up properly, which are asked to be cleaned in 15 minutes, would be poorly cleaned, the union representing industry workers noted.
Cleaners have raised general concerns that already-used cloths are being pressed into service to clean glasses in the schedule.
''[Cleaners] use hand towels and face towels to clean the glasses for drinking. Or they go to the toilet bowl, and then go to the next room and touch the glass. The hotel just doesn't give you a clean cloth for every room,'' a former hotel cleaner, Yustina Laisanna, said.
A new instruction sheet that was released by the national housekeeping contractor Australian Hospitality Services, detailed 22 steps for a well-cleaned room. Steps included cleaning, bathroom, cleaning all glass surfaces, and so forth.
The concerns over contractor cleaners, many of whom work for hotel chains, have led to the Fair Work Ombudsman to start a campaign checking on conditions and pay-rates for cleanings worldwide.
Jess Walsh, of union United Voice, stated that it took 45 minutes for a cleaner to properly hit every needed item on the list. But “hotel bosses' are often demanding that the work be done in 15 minutes, according to Walsh.
''Most hotel room attendants are lucky to make $450 a week,'' she said, with many working unpaid overtime to get their jobs done properly. ''These missing wages could add $10,000 a year to their income.”
Richard Munro, who is chief executive of the Accommodation Association of Australia, stated that most hotels gave their cleaners more than enough time to properly clean the rooms.
''First and foremost the product has to be first rate, so we as an industry don't compromise standards,'' he said. ''Consumers will tell [hotels] very quickly if their product is not up to speed. If someone is not giving cleaners enough time to clean their rooms, their consumers will tell them.''
