Builders and other industry workers now have found the opportunity to find what home buyers truly want, and not simply give up in the market, as the industry is seeing a slight upturn. Many are now seeing features they are ready to leave behind in light or economic realities with publication of the National Association of Home Builders.

The NAHB's publishing bodyBuilder Books, has released a report on “What Home Buyers Really Want. Within the study, there is outlines for home buyers' preferences in regards to the home type, as well as size. Items like layout, design, kitchen and bath designs, window and door options, as well as outdoor features and accessibility, electronics and technology, as well as energy efficient options are all noted within the report.

The study was held by the NAHB's Economic and Housing Policy Group in 2012, and was based on surveys taken of homeowners nationwide.

“This survey is a great resource for building professionals, as it provides an inside look at the things home buyers really want or don’t want in their homes,” said Rose Quint, NAHB’s Assistant Vice President for Survey Research, and one of the study’s authors. “With the housing market beginning to recover, and more consumers in the position to purchase a home, it is more important than ever for builders to be armed with this information.”

Of the most wanted features include energy efficiency designs and implementations, with 90% of buyers noting they were rather live in an energy efficient home. Prospective buyers also want organization and proper storage options, with a large majority wishing for a laundry room, a linen closet, as well as bath and garage storage. Many also noted they wished for a walk-in pantry.

The least wanted items were unnecessary lavishness, including elevators, high-density communities or golf-course homes, as well as shower stalls without tubs in the master bathroom.
