(EstateNewsWire.com, January 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It has been 16 long years for the Notre Dame faithful, as they waited for another opportunity to the BCS National College Football Championship trophy home. With the Gold-and-Blue returning to the heralded game, Larry Rodts believes this is the right time for him to profit off of the 9x9-foot blue carpet, complete with Notre Dame logo, that was used inside the locker room at Notre Dame during their last championship year.
"Nobody thought they'd have the year they had," said Rodts, a former Mishawaka resident who now splits time between Florida and Three Rivers. "I've been waiting for Notre Dame to hire a good coach and get it over with and sell it."
The Championship will pit Notre Dame against Alabama on January 7 for the title of the best college football team of the year.
Rodts brought the logo hom in 1996 when the university auctioned it off, along with several other items, during the expansion of the school's stadium.
Rodts recalls walking into the Century Center during the action and seeing the carpet displayed, surrounded by red, velvet rope.
"I had to have it," he said simply.
The gold logo was once part of the carpet in the locker room for up to 18 years, and was shown in the popular movie, Rudy, according to Rodts. He stated that he had a certificate of authenticity to go along with the carpet. The letter of authenticity was signed by Lou Holtz and Tony Rice during its turnover to his authority.
Rodts saw the purchase as a long-term investment when he nabbed it. He took it out of the box for the first time after Notre Dame defeated USC, in order to take pictures of it for his eBay sale.
Rodts stated that he had it on eBay for one week since then, but took it down due to it not being displayed in the proper forum. He hopes it will be back up in time to sell before or immediately following the championship game.
"One guy emailed me and said he always wondered where the Holy Grail of Notre Dame memorabilia went," he said.
Rodts, who declined to stated the amount he bought the carpet for, is asking for $15,000 for the opening bid. He stated that the logo was appraised at $17,500 years prior.
"What something's worth is not how much you paid for it, but how much someone is willing to pay for it," Rodts said.
