(EstateNewsWire.com, December 21, 2012 ) Lincoln, UK -- Those in the trades sector are at odds with the Ontario government after a plan was set in place that will, according to the tradespeople, drive consumer costs higher for services such as plumbers, cosmetology, and auto repairs.
The outrage is in reaction to the Ontario College of Trades, which is funded through people's membership fees. The trade sector are calling on Ontario's leadership in the Liberal party to step forward in order to reverse the plan.
"We need to promote the trades...but the way to do that is not to create a new bureaucracy and attach a bunch of new fees," said Sean Reid, Chair of the Stop the Trades Tax campaign. Reid stated that the new trades tax would likely cost the workers between $60-$120 in annual fees, which is a burden that will eventually fall to the consumers.
The move has promoted the “Stop the Trades Tax” campaign, which has become 130,000 tradespeople strong. Among those involved are those concerned trax taxes will force many businesses to go “underground with the intention of making it cheaper for customers,” according to drywall contractor, Simeon DeVries.
According to Ontario Progressive Conservatives, there is little-to-no merit to the college at all. "The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities does a good job when it's working effectively, and the Ontario College of trades as far as we're concerned, and we've looked into this in great detail, is going to do nothing," said Garfield Dunlop, Ontario PC MPP.
There are still others who think the college is a necessary commodity, as it will professionalize many skill trades. "Just like a doctor, dentist, lawyer or dental hygienist, which all have governing bodies or colleges, this college will now regulate skilled trades workers in Ontario," said Chris Smilie of Canadian Building Trades.
