The Chairman was told again and again that his business was archaic and would no longer be capable of competing with the new online auctioning capability of eBay and like companies. The CEO's reaction was simple, “I was like, 'I don't think so,'” says Jackson.

Jackson had only taken over his father's company that year, and was in no rush to sell the company which his father started in 1971 alongside Tom Barett.

Jackson was correct to not listen to the 'experts', and Barrett-Jackson has sold $1 billion worth of cars since then. “You can commoditize 2,000 Tauruses. They’re only different on mileage and this and that,” says Jackson by way of explanation. “But with a collector car there are so many things to look at. And it’s a passion purchase.”

In the 2012 auctions, Barrett-Jackson has amass more than $140 million in auctions that spanned Las Vegas, Orange County, Scottsdale, and Palm Springs.

The flagship auction in Schottsdale pulled in $92 million from 270,000 visitors all on its own. The auctions have become something of a must-attend event series among collectible-car lovers and general enthusiasts alike. The shows are known for having a pleasing mixture of showmanship and quality networking opportunities where the business-savvy can schmooze.

Jackson, with thick chops, a deep drawl, and a thick neck, is considered a 'ringleader' of sorts, he is also known for being a bit of an introvert. “People think he’s aloof,” says best friend Perry Dodd, an automobile detailer. “But he’s merely a man who takes his work seriously, focusing on the transparency of the transactions

For Jackson, that work comes with its perks that any gearhead would be jealous of, as he can take his pick of the litter when it comes to car selection. He now owns 19 cars, most of which are of the muscle-car variety. Jackson had his first car at 17, when his father bought him a Corvette. He purchased his fist car, which he still owns, was a 1966 Pontiac LeMans. “I grew up around these cars,” he says.

Now, Jackson's collection include a 1961 Chevy Impala custom coupe, 1965 Shelby Mustang GT 350, 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger, 1997 Dodge Viper, and 2012 Camaro Z1. Jackson is also restoring a Ferrari Daytona alongside his son, which he hopes removes his youngster's obsession with video games.
