Survey Finds Bathroom Becoming More for Social Media use reports Plumb Traders

One could shut the door and be alone, if only for a brief moment, from work, school, errands, even children. Unfortunately, according to new data released, when you have to go, your social media follows along.

According to a new Nielsen release “State of the Media: Social Media Report,” a third of U.S. Citizens between the ages of 18-24 years old use their social media whilst in the bathroom. These individuals are updating statuses, checking social feeds, or otherwise engaged in social media, all while sitting at the thrown, as it were.

This is not a wholly new phenomena. Some engaged in using phones in the bathroom, even before the cordless was invented. These individuals opted to have a phone installed within the bathroom itself. But these individuals were rather rare, especially compared to todays numbers in frequency.

The major fact the numbers denote is that social media use is up dramatically.

According to the report, which is released annually, the time spent on Twitter and Facebook applications and websites increased by 63% since the start of 2012. American's spent over 25 billion total minutes per month using Facebook, while they used 3.6 million on Twitter applications.

The numbers confirm another telling fact, that Facebook continues to be the most utilized social media network in U.S., as 17% of time spent on the computer is on Facebook.com or one of its applications. According to the report, Twitter came in second place, with Pinterest rising over the 2012 year.

Nielsen's data reinforces what many had noticed: Pinterest is popular among women, with 70% of users being women.
