(EstateNewsWire.com, December 26, 2012 ) Corte Madera CA – A riddle from the Corte Madera Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard – What do Christmas tree fires and dryer vent fires have in common? The answer – Both can be devastating and both are easy to prevent. Dryer vent cleaning is the best way to avoid a dryer fire. Proper selection and care of a live Christmas tree will eliminate a fire hazard.
So, why does the Wizard care about Christmas fires? Dryer Vent Wizard specializes in dryer vent service while educating the customer about dryer fire prevention and energy savings. Rhonda Nole, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, is specially trained to spot and correct fire hazards in the laundry room, but she also provides tips during the holiday season to prevent Christmas tree fires.
More home fires occur during the holiday season with many of them being caused by live Christmas trees. Between 2006 and 2010 firefighters responded to an average of 230 Christmas tree fires, causing an average of 4 deaths, 21 injuries and 17.3 Million in property damage annually.
Here is some information the Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard (http://www.dryerventwizarddryerventcleaning.com/) is sharing with her customers while providing an important home service:
• Christmas tree fires, though not common, are likely to be serious when they do occur. On average, 1 out of 66 Christmas tree fires resulted in death.
• Those who use an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled; certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
• Those who choose a live tree should select one with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
• Cut 1 – 2 inches from the base of the trunk before placing in the tree stand and water daily
• Place the tree at least 3 feet away from any heat source including fireplaces, radiators, heat vents and candles. One out of every 5 Christmas tree fires is caused by placing a heater too close.
• Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit
• Use lights that have a label of an independent testing laboratory.
• Read the packaging and be sure to use only as intended; some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
• Check strings of lights each year for worn or broken cords and sockets or loose bulb connections.
• Do not overload outlets. The label should indicate the maximum number of stings that can be connected and plugged into one outlet.
• Always turn off Christmas lights when leaving the home or going to sleep.
• Dispose of tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be kept in the home or left in the garage. Check with your local community for a recycling program. Bring outdoor lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
Like Christmas tree fires, dryer vent fires are easy to prevent through proper maintenance. Professional dryer vent installation followed by regularly scheduled dryer vent cleaning will improve dryer performance and make the dryer operate more safely and efficiently.
