The Thanksgiving period, with its big meals, typically means more work for plumbers. The day after Thanksgiving is often busier than the holiday itself, plumbers say.
“Normally, it’s a pretty packed day,” said Chris Rainaldi, who owns Rainaldi Plumbing. “We work from 7:30 in the morning and it’s steady up to 6 o’clock at night.”
Rainaldi, whose business in Central Florida has 35 workers, recently spoke to ABC News.
Black Friday is busier than a typical Friday, according to Roto-Rooter. The company found that over the past seven years, there is 47% to 50% more work than a normal end-of-the-workweek day. For the Thanksgiving period, business is 21% higher than a non-holiday Thursday-Sunday stretch.
In this time, the biggest problems are in the kitchen. Roto-Rooter Service PR director Paul Abrams said that drains get clogged because people put the wrong things into them
“The number-one reason for calls is kitchen sink drains and garbage disposals,” Abrams said.
Another frequent problem is found in the sewage lines.
“There’s always someone who tries to flush things down the toilet, like turkey carcasses and things from the meal,” Abrams said. “Maybe they don’t have garbage disposal.”
Roto-Rooter recommends that people do not put fats and cooking oil in drains. Poultry skin, potato peels and other fibrous materials also should not go into garbage disposers. Cotton, hair and scrub pads do not dissolve and should not go down toilets.
Although drains may get clogged during cleanup from a Thanksgiving meal, people often wait until the next day to call a plumber, according to Chuck White, a vice president of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors National Association.
“When people are cleaning up, usually they’re exhausted by the ordeal of the day. They say, we’ll call in the morning,” White told ABC.
