“I was like, ‘I don’t think so,’” says Jackson, who had taken over the company that year from his father who had started the company along with Tom Barrett.
As it turns out, Jackson knew what he was talking about, and Barrett-Jackson has sold $1 billion worth of cars since.
“You can commoditize 2,000 Tauruses. They’re only different on mileage and this and that,” says Jackson by way of explanation. “But with a collector car there are so many things to look at. And it’s a passion purchase.”
At sales in Las Vegas, Palm Peach, Scottsdale, and Orange County, the BJ line took more than more than $140 million. Scottsdale in particular attracted over 250,000 visitors and accrued $92 million. The auctions are a must-attend even these days, and they have provided a seamless opportunity between showmanship and networking.
“There are hundreds of thousands of people who have bought cars and joined the hobby because of Craig,” says McKeel Hagerty, the chief executive of an eponymous agency that insures high-end cars.
Jackson, along with his monetary success, gets to live out every car enthusiasts dream. He is able to pick out whatever car he likes best. He is the owner of 19 total these days. His father gave him his first when he was 17; a Corvette. The first car he purchased himself was a 1966 Pontiac LeMans, which he still owns. “I grew up around these cars,” he says.
One of Jackson's prized “restored to modern car,” is his 1932 Ford custom Roadster, which was built in 1952. It comes flush with Ardun heads on a supercharger, along with a flathead engine. He also loves his 1970 Hemi Cuda convertible, which is one of just over one-dozen ever made.
The cars remain alert by electrical battery tenders. Jackson himself, employes“I grew up around these cars,” he says. One man to help him exercise them when necessary. He also enjoys supercar tours and rallies to make sure the cars stay in use.
