Improvements at PoetÂ’s Historic Home Include Indoor Bathrooms reports Emergency Plumbers Romford

(EstateNewsWire.com, December 13, 2012 ) England, U.K -- Plans are in the works to build a visitor center for the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home in downtown Indianapolis.

The famous 19th-century poet’s home has been rather unwelcoming since it became a historical site.

It has no bathrooms, and instead portable toilets behind the home have been provided for the site’s 7,000-plus visitors a year. The museum also lacks space to accommodate poetry readings, video showings or group luncheons.

The museum’s director acknowledges the shortcomings.

“There’s not a whole lot you can do here except see the house,” Jim Obergfell told the Indianapolis Star.

The Victorian home in the Lockerbie Square area opened as a museum dedicated to Riley 90 years ago, displaying the poet’s furnishings and possessions such as a top hat and cane.

The Riley Children’s Foundation will spend $1 million to build the 1,540-square-foot visitor center. The structure will have up-to-date video equipment and be able to seat 60 individuals. Bathrooms will be included.

The Riley Foundation, which owns the museum, is aiming to serve its audience, according to vice president of marketing Maureen Manier.

“We really are working to keep the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home relevant to the public so they can learn about the history and impact of James Whitcomb Riley,” she told the Star. “The visitors center will help best to do that.”

Riley’s two-story brick home is now a national landmark. Construction of the visitors center is expected to begin in March if it is approved. Obergfell said it could open by Riley’s birthday – Oct. 7.

The new building will be a meeting place for the Lockerbie Square Peoples Club, which has called the center a benefit to the historical neighborhood.

Museum official hope the center will draw more visitors.

“It will give them more reason to come here other than just seeing the house,” said Obergfell, the director.
