(EstateNewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) Buckinghamshire, UK -- It is likely nobody would pay £200 a year for central heating repair if you knew the most it would pay out for a single breakdown was £400; yet, that is exactly what thousands of households that bought npower's boiler and heating care plan have experienced just that.
Npower told Nick Howden that it could not carry out a £450 repair for his eight-year-old Worcester Bosch boiler due it its cost exceeding the boilers current value of £397. They quoted him for an entirely new unit, with the cost of installation over £3,100.
Howden's boiler had been losing pressure. The areospace engineer called npower's engineer who told him it need a new £300 heat exchanger, which cost £450 with installation.
Howden was then astonished to find out that the company refused to work on the unit, claiming that it was “beyond economic repair” despite his diligent payment of premiums.
A letter sent by npower stated that a member of its staff had found a new boiler that would cost him £1,420, and with 9% depreciation, it was now worth £397, thus not economically valuable enough for repair.
"I am confident that the economic value of your boiler would be around the sum of £397 plus or minus a few pounds," npower said, ignoring any installation costs.
When Howden lodged a complaint, he was told that npower was able to dictate the calculated value of the unit's economic value. Adding insult to injury, Howden stated the company did not offer him the £400, and instead offered him a £450 discount on the £3,160 quoted to replace the boiler, and adding that discount applied only if he used npower's “approved installer”.
In the end, Howden asked the Worcester Bosch manufacturer to fix the problem. The engineer charged him £300, and less than the BER figure. He was also given a year-long warranty.
"Npower won't even admit that there is a problem. You have to wonder how many other owners of older boilers who buy £200-a-year cover from npower are aware that if any repair cost exceeds £400 or so, the company will refuse to pay. It's extraordinary. I will be looking to take this further," says Howden.
Npower denies the claim, and states there is no limit to the number of callouts or value of repair during the agreement period. It stated it was unfair to conclude that most it is willing to pay is £400, as all calculations depends upon the age and value of the boiler.
"Our boiler care product in this case allowed multiple repairs in any one year. Our records show we had carried out two previous repairs at a cost of £477, before the customer's boiler was deemed beyond economical repair. We do not feel we're at fault, as we have acted fairly and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the customer's care products," says an npower spokesman.
