(EstateNewsWire.com, November 27, 2012 ) Canton, MI – Keith Paul, President of HandyPro Handyman Services, becomes concerned about his family and community when he reads about residential fires in his neighborhood. The frequency of home fires increases during the fall and winter months so the local handyman is working to raise public awareness of the importance of spotting and correcting fire hazards in the home.
Home fires are devastating and many are easily preventable. Each year too many people are injured or killed in house fires. Many of these tragedies could have been prevented with education and a fire-safety plan.
Keith Paul is the friendly neighborhood handyman who provides honest and dependable home repair service for residents and commercial business owners in South East Michigan (http://www.handypro.com). With the frequency of home fires increasing during the winter time, Keith is providing tips to his customers to stay safe.
The Canton Handyman advises his customers to install smoke detectors outside of each bedroom and at the top and bottom of each stairway. “Check them once a month and change batteries twice a year,” said Paul.
Many home fires are caused by electrical problems. Keith Paul advises residents to inspect all extension cords to be sure they are in good condition and make sure all plugs and switches have covers. “If you have any concerns, call a licensed electrician for a safety inspection,” said Paul.
Paul also advises people to make sure bedroom windows open properly and are not painted shut. “Sleep with your door closed,” said Paul. “A solid wood door can take up to 10 minutes to burn.”
In addition to fire-prevention, families should have a fire-escape plan in place. “Most deaths occur from smoke inhalation, not the flames,” explained Paul. “Teach your family to crawl on the floor during a fire and plan a meeting place outside to ensure everyone is out safely. Practice as if there were a real fire and plan how to escape from each room in your home. If bedrooms are on the second floor, consider having escape ladders installed.”
Keith Paul practices his fire-escape plan with his wife and children each week to be sure they know what to do in the event of a fire. Keith Paul is a state of Michigan licensed builder and full service handyman. Visit http://www.handymanservicescanton.com/ for more home improvement tips from HandyPro Handyman Services.
