(EstateNewsWire.com, November 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A Wall Street Journal report found that large kitchens are becoming the norm around the country, but are not necessarily being used to cook.
In places like Beverly Hills, Miami Beach, and even some large estates in Illinois, The Wall Street Journal found that those who can afford large, extravagant kitchens are often the ones who lack the time to cook in them. Even if the tenants do have time to cook, they often will have a smaller cooking area elsewhere in the house in order to prevent the “showroom” kitchen from smelling or getting messed up; a rather ironic situation.
The times of having one stove, a refrigerator, and an oven are over and have been replaced by restaurant quality entertainment spaces, refrigeration rooms, wet bars, and beautiful seating areas. The Journal study found that those with financials to own such a kitchen, are often the ones who can afford a chef for their cooking needs.
One of the homes profiled in The Journal study is a 5,000 square foot kitchen in Beverly Hills, which seats sixteen guests on sofas and even leads to an open garden. The kitchen is filled with big screen TV’s and looks more like a restaurant then a kitchen.
Another profiled was an Illinois kitchen spacing 700 square feet that was formerly a two-car garage and includes an alcove office.
A Miami beach kitchen is just for show as the cooking kitchen is actually downstairs where the staff works. When the food is ready, it is cranked to the upstairs kitchen by a dumbwaiter.
The Wall Street Journal’s report highlights that the new wave of kitchens is huge, fancy, and unused. The kitchen has taken over the living room as the entertainment room in many high-priced homes across the country, and the irony is stunning. Those fortunate enough to have such lavish spaces are the same ones that can afford a “cooking kitchen” and staff to use them.
