Helfrich stated that Winfrey had visited Browne on the day he passed. Browne’s career received a considerable boost after Winfrey praised his work in a national magazine a decade ago.

“Anthony is a master at putting colors together,” she told Architectural Digest in 2003. “When he’s finished, the whole room rises up to meet you.”

Winfrey stated that she saved a magazine photo of the room Browne decorated in Baltimore years after the completion. Browne also helped furnish her home in Santa Barbara, California.

Browne was not always designer to the stars, as he started out as a personal assistant for Robert Stigwood, who managed rock groups which as Cream. Stigwood was also business partner of former Beatles manager, Brian Epstein. Browne also followed the Bee Gees on a world tour as their manager.

In the 1970s, he left the world of rock-and-roll behind and took over his family business. Starcraft Cleaners was a London firm specializing in fabric restoration and cleaning.

Brown worked with Starcraft nurtured a growing interest in design, and he eventually found himself working with clients, suggesting furnishing for the home to compliment the carpeting.

Browne’s style caught the eye of both English and American dignitaries. Such individuals included British Ambassador Nicholas Henderson.

“You’ll never find a white ceiling in anything I’ve ever done,” he once told the New York Times.

Mr. Browne was especially keen on “timeless” fabrics, particularly floral chintzes.

“The best design look,” he explained to The Washington Post in 1991, “is something that does not look new when you finish.”

Browne quickly gained clout with the elite, and he moved to the Washington area in the 1980s to open Georgetown design boutique, Anthony P. Browne Inc.

Along with outfitting homes in the Washington and New York areas, Brown dabbled in restaurant, theater, and costume design. He was even given a job “dressing up” a suite at the British embassy, which was visited by Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1985.

“I got the most ridiculous phone calls from the press at the time,” Mr. Brown told the Times. “They asked me such questions as, ‘Does Princess Diana have a nylon cover on her lavatory seat?”
