(EstateNewsWire.com, November 25, 2012 ) San Antonio, TX -- A series of natural disasters that occurred across the globe has created the need for natural disaster awareness across the global map. Many within the building sector are changing the what and how they emphasize needed changes in design and development. Resilience architecture is now gaining footing as the tally of disasters rises. Guidelines are becoming stricter in many areas prone to extreme environmental shifts. As a part of global response, Baylor University (U.S.) interior design students have been tasked with a 400-square-foot disaster relief project for ‘Social Design Summit: Designing for Disaster Relief Housing’.
These students will be asked to work with others from outside their own faculties in order to find comprehension of the positive and negative attributes for post-disaster dwellings in the 1906 and 2005 disasters that his San Francisco and New Orleans, respectively.
Concepts will become part of a larger effort within a competition founded by the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) as well as the Florida International University’s Department of Interior Architecture.
A sense of security as well as sensitivity will be key components in figuring the delivery of such particular concepts. The space is expected to offer the feeling of comfort to temporary inhabitants.
Tents are outright the wrong direction for the project, and with small-scale dwelling, requiring sleeping, food-prep, and bathroom areas can be a somewhat difficult design task. Sustainability, water and waste management add further complications to an already tasking project. Students will create 3D models, as well as a three-minute public service announcement clip, explaining their concept and what makes them effective. Allison Lutz explains how difficult it can be to come up with a functioning product with such practical restrictions in line. “My apartment is 450 square feet, but I live by myself,” she says. “When you think about four people living in that space, it’s hard to know where to start.”
Faculty advisor’s talents will be at the disposal of students, and the faculty calls the competition a ‘unique learning experience’.
“After a crisis, the faster we can get people into a stable situation with housing and food, the better they will fare psychologically,” says Dr. Sara Dolan, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor. ”The immediate need may be to give them a toothbrush or a bottle of water or to get them their medications, not counseling. I think we can help the interior design students understand the needs of these survivors so they can design a home.” About Interior Designer:
