How to Write a Press Release in Inverted Pyramid Style

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 11, 2008 ) To write a press release in inverted pyramid means you present the most relevant information in the first paragraph followed by less important information in paragraphs that follow.

Hook your audience

If you have something important to say about your product, service, personnel, company or organization, say it in the first paragraph. You want to capture the attention of your audience at the beginning of your release with a “hook” loaded with facts. The “hook” of your release should cover all the ‘who’, ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘what’, ‘why’ or (how). These five Ws should include facts about your press release.

Give facts to journalists

We all know that journalists have deadlines, and sometimes they rush to produce articles. We also know that journalists receive many press releases. To distinguish your release from the pack, give journalist facts within the first paragraphs of your release, else your news release fades in to a waste basket.

Another reason you want to present your press release in inverted pyramid is because, journalists may choose to cut and discard less important part of your press release. The important part of the release is used in an article.

Lay Your Facts for the Internet.

On the Internet, many online readers or journalists are known to read only a few paragraphs on their computer screen. They are less likely to scroll down the screen to read further. Therefore, you want to present your most information above the fold with less important information in the paragraphs that follow.

Whoever your audience is, journalists or online readers, presenting your facts within introducing paragraphs of your release will get your point across. Otherwise, your missive will be lost in waste baskets or in cyberspace.
