(EstateNewsWire.com, November 15, 2012 ) Naples, FL- With the winds of Hurricane Sandy beginning to whip up outside, Debbie Drake filled her shopping card with “goodies for the grandkids” and other storm supplies on Monday at the Pittsfield Walmart.
Expecting the storm to top that of Tropical Storm Irene, Drake said she planned to be well stocked with items for her grandchildren, including pancake mix and candy. She also had typical storm supplies such as water and spare batteries.
"I had my maintenance man take out our air conditioners," said Drake. "We're just making sure we're prepared. I hope everybody stays safe and dry."
Drake was not the only Berkshire County resident preparing for the storm that day. Many others picked up supplies at area supermarkets, hardware stores, and even liquor stores, in hopes of weathering the hurricane.
"Besides generators, sump pumps, flashlights and batteries have really been selling well today," said Tony Pedolzky, manager of the Home Depot at Berkshire Crossings in Pittsfield. He added that there are 75 product delivery trucks stationed at the various Home Depot distribution centers throughout the nation in preparation for items selling out in storm-battered country. He and his team will have to wait to see how hard Berkshire is hit by the storm before finding out whether his store will be one of those restocked first.
The H. Greenberg & Son in North Adams had sold out of generators by Monday afternoon. Other items, including size D batteries, flashlights, and rain gear, were also selling well, said Tony Esposito, store director of operations. The store also stocked up on post-storm-related items, such as chainsaws and tarps, he said.
Where groceries were concerned, the Berkshire Co-Op Market in Great Barrington had sold out of bottled water and was fast running out of canned goods by Monday afternoon, said Matt Novik, store communications manager. He noted that the store’s experience during last year’s storm helped staff prepare for this year’s weather event. "This year we made a point of ordering more of everything, just in case.”
Meanwhile, Pittsfield’s Liquors, Inc. store was doing brisk business on Monday, according to Debbie Robitaill, manager. “People take this stuff seriously,” she said, adding that people generally buy alcohol during inclement weather. "People know what matters to them during this kind of weather," she said. "And you know what else I like? It takes people's mind off of the elections. It's nice to hear about something else."
