(EstateNewsWire.com, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- The MP for Bristol North West, Charlotte Leslie said that pubs resembled the real-world version of the House of commons. Leslie stated that these meeting areas were “where there are proper debates about real things”.
The minister of the Treasury backed this somewhat surprising claim, and stated that pubs benefit from plans to charge minimum price for alcohol to offset supermarkets push for cheap deals.
Leslie has held office in parliament since the 2010 elections, and she spoke during a commons debate regarding beer duty. The MP warned the duty was damaging the pub industry.
“All of us probably enjoy a pint, but why is this debate so important?” she asked. “It is about a bit more than a pint in the pub, although of course that is very important to a lot of us.
“I am sure that I am not the only member present who, wanting to find out what is happening in the constituency, goes first of all to the pub and enjoys a nice pint at the same time,” she said.
“If we are to talk about the big society, we should recognize that the pub is at the heart of it. It is a little-known fact that pubs donate more than £120 million a year to charitable causes.
The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid, stated that the government wanted to assist communities in the takeover of running facilities, “including pubs”.
“Minimum unit pricing” of alcohol is supposed to stop drinks being sold at supermarkets off licenses. Such alcohols are heavily discounted at most stores, which puts pubs at a disadvantage that can be difficult to overcome. “Raising the price of cheap alcohol will help tackle excessive alcohol consumption, and I hope that pubs will benefit,” he said.
“The Government recognize the importance of pubs and brewers to their local communities and the wider economy. We have done much to try and support that industry,” he said.
