(EstateNewsWire.com, November 13, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia- Theresa Evans, a junior high student from Cleveland, Tennessee use to always admire a two-story brick house along the historic Ocoee Street on her walk home after school.
"I used to imagine how it would look if I lived there," she said of the 3,000-square-foot, Georgian-style home, which was built in 1949.
Evans eventually was able to buy the house in 2005 and has transformed her dream home into exactly what she always wanted it to look like.
From enclosing the drive-through portico into a sunroom, painting the red brick with a glossy white, and updating the entranceway, she methodically created a revitalized curb appeal for the house.
Evans placed marble floor and a staircase for an entry foyer. She reopened the second floor into a ballroom dance floor, so she could indulge in her passion for ballroom dance.
But the most drastic renovation was the kitchen. Evans called on the assistance of Hank Matheny, a member of the American Society of Interior Designers, at Haskell Interiors in Cleveland.
Matheny and his associate, Sheila Stubbs, produced a functional design, keeping in mind that the project must meld elegant updates that meshed well with the historic ambiance.
The hard work and vision paid off, as the kitchen was awarded first place for Best Traditional Kitchen in the 14th annual kitchen design competition sponsored by Signature Kitchens & Baths magazine. The award marks the second in as many years for Haskell Interior designs.
Evans confessed that the former space was nice but that it was "a lot of appliances and not much kitchen. There was no natural light, and that's what I missed."
"It had a big Viking stove and stainless-steel fridge. It was out of proportion," explained Matheny. "This time we made the appliances disappear. We covered them in the same panels as the cabinets. The eye flows around the room; you see a beautiful room, not appliances."
