(EstateNewsWire.com, November 12, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- While superheroes are not often seen taking on daily tasks, but a new trend for cleaning companies took on the super personas to bring a smile to sick kids.
The sightings of superhero window-cleaners have been reported at hospitals in London, Pittsburgh, and Memphis.
The endeavor serves two purposes. One is obviously to keep windows clean and shiny, and the other is to cheer up the patients of the three children’s hospitals.
There is likely no better way to distract young patients from their health issues than to see their favorite action hero sitting right outside their window. The heroes, in their full outfits, waved to children while wiping down windows as they brought the smile the children’s faces.
The idea originated in England, according to reports. The Evelina Children’s hospital at St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London made it mandatory for their window cleaners. They mandate each dress up as a hero such as Batman, Spiderman, or Superman (along with other heroic characters). The Evelina Children’s Hospital was designed with helping sick children endure throughout their difficulties, and the costume cleaning is just one of the many ways that cater to the goal of healing through happiness.
The experiment from Evelina was noticed by Michelle Matuizek, who is the office manager of a Pittsburgh company, Allegheny Window Cleaning. The company has the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as a client.
"On Facebook I saw the London window cleaners doing it, and I thought it'd be a great opportunity here. We went through the proper channels at the hospital and got the idea approved," she tells Samaritanmag.
The concept was a huge success in Pennsylvania as soon as its initial trial run on October 22. The outfits used by the Americans were top-quality clothing that was rented from a theatrical company and were priced around $200 apiece.
"I got the costumes, and we didn't go cheap," says Michelle. "The Batman costume had 11 pieces to it and it was a rubber suit that was heavy and hot. Our foreman, Jimmy Zaremba, wore that, and he was a real good sport. We picked costumes that were non-threatening and we chose positive characters. We didn't want the Joker up there, scaring them!"
Michelle was so happy to see the children light up and was very happy to see her workers willing to help the children have a bright spot in their otherwise difficult days.
"It was just awesome," she says. "The kids had such a good time, and it was so uplifting for everyone. We picked the patient care areas where the children are not able to get out of bed, and they just went wild. Our superheroes here had tears in their eyes that day."
She notes that "Children's Hospital is a great organization to work for, but it can be tough for the guys. There are times where they go into very sensitive areas and it's touching. This was really a great experience to bring the kids out of where they're at."
